Protection and Cover Options for Self Storage Units

Do you need protection for your unit?
Protection and Cover Options for Self Storage Units

When you rent a storage unit, it is easy to assume your belongings are automatically protected.

But most self storage facilities require you to have adequate protection in place for your stored items—whether that means participating in a contents protection scheme or maintaining your own insurance. Understanding your protection options for self storage units helps you make an informed decision and ensures your items are properly covered if something goes wrong.

Why You Need Protection for Stored Items

Even though self storage is designed with security in mind, there are still risks. Fires, floods, and break-ins can happen in any storage facility, and without adequate cover, you could lose everything. Proper protection acts as a safety net, covering the costs of replacing or repairing your goods if the unexpected happens.

Most providers will not let you move your items into a storage unit without proof of cover or participation in their protection scheme. This protects both the storage provider and the customer, ensuring every storage unit has proper protection in place.

Contents Protection Schemes vs Insurance

At Pink Storage, we offer a Contents Protection Scheme rather than insurance. The Scheme is a discretionary, self-funded protection scheme—it is not an insurance policy and Pink Storage is not an insurer. Under the Scheme, we may provide compensation for loss or damage caused by fire, flood, theft following forced entry, and other incidents, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

Alternatively, you may maintain your own suitable insurance from a third-party provider. Many customers use specialist storage cover providers, and some home insurance policies extend to items stored off-site (though often with limitations). Whatever option you choose, you must have adequate protection for your stored goods.

What Does Protection Cover?

Under Pink Storage's Contents Protection Scheme, cover may apply to loss or damage caused by fire, flood, theft following forced entry, vandalism, and structural failure of the storage unit. The Scheme does not cover cash, jewellery, antiques, documents, vehicles, or certain other items—see our Contents Protection Terms & Conditions for the full list.

If you use your own insurance, the level of cover depends on your provider and the value you declare. Always check the policy details to ensure you have adequate coverage for your specific needs.

The Cost of Protection

The costs of self storage protection vary. Contents protection schemes typically charge a fee based on the declared value of your items. If you use your own insurer, costs are usually a small percentage of your total item value per month.

While it might be tempting to skip protection to save money, the potential loss of your belongings can far outweigh the cost. Think of it as a small price for peace of mind, knowing your stored items are protected from risks beyond your control.

Choosing the Right Option

When choosing protection for your stored items, consider whether a facility's contents protection scheme or your own insurance suits you best. At Pink Storage, you can participate in our Contents Protection Scheme or provide evidence of your own suitable insurance.

When comparing options, check for exclusions and coverage limits. Look closely at what is protected and what is not. For example, most schemes and policies exclude cash, jewellery, and perishable items. Understanding these details ensures you select appropriate protection for your specific needs.

How to Make a Claim

If an incident happens, the claims process depends on your protection option. Under our Contents Protection Scheme, claims must be submitted in writing within 14 days of discovery, with proof of ownership, proof of value, and photographs where available.

If you use your own insurance, contact your provider as soon as possible. Keeping a list of your stored items and their condition before placing them in storage can make the process much smoother.

Additional Factors to Consider

When reviewing protection options, think about accessibility, coverage limits, and how long your items will stay in storage. If you are storing long-term, make sure your cover remains valid for the entire duration.

Check that your storage facility maintains strong security measures, including cameras, alarms, and restricted access. These reduce risk. You also need to pack your goods properly so they don't get damaged due to negligence—get those packing materials ready.

Making the Best Choice

Selecting the right protection is about balance. You need an option that offers strong protection without unnecessary extras. Read the terms carefully, pay attention to coverage limits, and confirm what types of goods and risks are included.

Having proper protection for your stored items is not just a facility requirement—it's about protecting your personal belongings, your money, and your peace of mind. With the right cover in place, you can store your items confidently, knowing that if something goes wrong, you're protected.
